Air source heat pumps take energy from the air, hence the name, and transfer it back into your home.
Air source systems are cost-effective and, compared to their ground source counterparts, are easy to install. Although, you do need sufficient space outside of your home. They produce a clean supply of heat with very little carbon emissions. As well as with traditional radiator systems, air source heat pumps can be very effective with underfloor heating.
Air source heat pumps require less space. Therefore, they present a significant advantage over ground source heat pumps as they are much more convenient for the typical homeowner and don’t require any additional work in the installation process.
As well as being a sustainable energy source, you’ll see a reduction in your bills; heat pumps run on electricity, so you’ll not have to worry about paying for gas.
Because air source heat pumps are highly energy efficient, they reduce wasted energy. The air source system produces up to four times more heat for each unit of electricity used, which is a significant reduction of electricity used compared to traditional electric heating systems.
Air source heat pumps also have the advantage of transferring heat from inside to outside during warmer weather.
The air source unit will be placed outside your home, either on the ground or fitted to a wall, and will need plenty of space around it for optimal airflow. Our initial consultation offers an assessment of your property, so if you’re unsure if you have the right space, we can check this for you.
Given that air source heat pumps produce less heat than traditional gas boilers, your home needs to be well-insulated; otherwise, they will not be effective.
The type of fuel you currently use will play a factor in your decision to switch to renewable energy. If switching from electric, oil, LPG, or coal, ground source heating systems will offer serious savings in both energy and money. With oil, LPG, or coal, you’ll also see a huge reduction in your carbon emissions.
If you currently use a natural gas system, while you’ll save money in the long run, these savings will be less significant than with the other fuel systems above. Despite that, they are still worthwhile, with the environmental benefits and energy savings they offer. It all depends on your motivation for switching to renewable energy.
Air source heat pumps actually function much more efficiently with underfloor heating or warm air heating systems over radiator-based systems. For this reason, if you have radiators, it would be worth evaluating the pros and cons of replacing them.
Due to their less intrusive nature compared to ground source systems, air source heat pumps are perfect for retrofits or existing modern buildings. However, they can also work great when building a new home, as sharing with other building work can reduce the installation costs.
Typically, the full installation process can take up to one week. Air source heat pumps can cost anywhere between £7,000 to £14,000 to buy and install. However, government grants of up to £7,500 are available through the Boiler Upgrade Scheme. Once the heating system is fitted, the maintenance costs are considerably lower.
After speaking with you to understand your requirements, our team will assess your property, which includes a heat loss calculation and performance certificate. This will identify your current energy usage, which will help us to predict your potential energy and financial savings.
We’ll then provide you with a quote, and when you’re happy to proceed, we will book a date that suits your schedule and get started with the installation. We’ll also provide you with plenty of information on how your heat pump works and how to run it for optimal efficiency. Our team will be on hand if you do have any further questions regarding your air source system.
